Above: Be sure to check out the video above, featuring the Saranac Lake Region portion of the 3 day 90-Miler Canoe Classic from Old Forge to Saranac Lake, finishing on Sunday, September 7 in Saranac Lake.
By all accounts, September in Saranac Lake is a very busy time for events. The leaves have barely begun to show colors at this point and as they do change, there'll be several events to entice you outside. Drag yourselves away from those Saturday afternoon football games and come participate in or watch some of our best events of the summer.
busy Labor day weekend
All told, counting every single event on Labor Day weekend, you have 25 opportunities to join in on some of our happenings in the Saranac Lake Region from Friday to Monday. Make sure you check out the entire
events calendar for those that aren't highlighted here. There are nature walks, outdoor movies, butterfly fun, great camp tours and loads more. Don't miss out on something you might have wanted to do by not checking the calendar today!Farm2Fork Festival
Farmers and home cooks unite in the 5th Annual Farm2Fork Fest on Saturday, August 30. If you haven't attended the fest in the past you're missing out on some great food and fun! New this year is the festival's partner TasteNY. TasteNY has been very busy promoting all of New York State's local food and beverage producers. They'll be along for the event and bringing with them some wine and beer makers and distillers as well.
I've attended the event and it's loads of fun. The tickets for the lunch are $10 and you get a good sized portion of many different foods at 11 different 'stations', including cucumber soup, focaccia, beet salad, pork sliders, smoked bacon, potato chips with goat creme, zucchini and mushroom fritattas, selections from the pickle bar, maple cake, ice cream and artisan beverages. Good grief! My mouth's watering already.
In addition to all the food, there's entertainment with Back Porch Society from 12 noon til 2 pm, a couple of talks by interesting folks such as Peter Shrope on Making Beer in your Basement and Tammy Morgan speaking about the Bio-Digestor soon to be coming to Lake Placid. Also, Drew Matott will present, "Pedal Powered Paper using Spent Brewers Grains" - hmm... sounds interesting.
Of course, the Farmers' Market is the anchor for the whole affair right in the middle of town at Riverside Park. Our regular vendors will be selling their wares in addition to all of the above activity. You surely won't want to miss this one, especially if you love food (and who doesn't love food).
be a hobo
Sunday, August 31st the hoboes come to town! Union Depot will be turned into festival headquarters as the music rolls into town for a day of hobo fun. Music celebrating the independent hobo spirit will be center stage all day starting at noon outside Union Depot for the Sixth Annual Hobofest. You'll be rocked and entertained by some local musicians as well as some touring bands and you'll love every one of them. There will be the added attraction of local food and craft beer as well as children's activities. All the fun takes place rain or shine, so put it on your calendar as a sure thing!
90 miles of paddling fun
The premier Adirondack outdoor event of the year is always the 90 Miler Adirondack Canoe Classic. This gruelling 3-day event pits some of the best paddlers around against each other, paddling from Old Forge to Saranac Lake. It's a sight to behold as wave after wave of competitors pour across Lake Flower most all afternoon in a race to the finish line at the NYS DEC Boat Launch on Lake Flower Avenue. The event begins on Friday, September 5th, as 275 boats (the organizers limit the race to this number) in all age groups and classes dig their paddles into the water on the first of the Fulton Chain of Lakes in Old Forge. Two overnights and three full days of paddling later, the finish line awaits on Lake Flower. Don't miss the mob of boats and cars and paddlers as they all gather to celebrate at the take out. It's loads of fun to watch.
So, there you have it. Three awesome events to choose from in addition to the other gazillion on the calendar for September. Check them all out on our Saranac Lake Events Calendar and make plans to visit us soon! You can also make a reservation for lodging right here as well.
See you at the events soon.
