Saranac Lake is home to some great waterways.
Popular fishing and paddling waters are now frozen over and the shanties and augers are out for ice fishing. Before you head out, here are five fun tips to ensure you get the best out of this cold-weather experience!
1. Get there early to get your favorite spot
Lake Colby is a popular ice fishing spot. It seems like every day as I drive by for work there is someone out on the ice fishing. I suggest you get there early so you can get all your tip-ups exactly where you want them!
2. Bring a shanty
Saranac Lake is a cool place — literally and figuratively. You’ll want to dress in many layers and bring a shanty for taking breaks and staying warm in.
3. Enjoy the views
It seems like you can find a breathtaking view anywhere you are in the Adirondacks, and Saranac Lake is no exception. The mountains are everywhere and they are beautiful!
4. Sign up for the Colby Classic
The annual event takes place the first weekend in March. This two-day fishing derby has been a popular event for years. I’ve seen many of my friends post pictures on social media of the huge fish they've caught on this weekend.
5. Enjoy the cool nightlife after
After a day on the ice you may find yourself wanting some delicious food to refuel. Saranac Lake has plenty of dining and nightlife options to enjoy in celebration of your big catch! Plan your own ice fishing trip, or make your plans to attend the Colby Classic Ice Fishing Derby!
See you on the lake!
