The great outdoors
Dewey Mountain Recreation Center has a full schedule of cross country ski and snowshoe events on tap for this winter. Every Tuesday night at 5:30 join in the Graymont Tuesday Night Race Series. Kids XC races start at 5:30 pm and adults at 6 pm. Visitors are always welcome, so if you feel your competitive spirit coming on, drive on over and join in. You'll meet some great locals at the same time!
Also at Dewey, every Friday night join them for the Friday Night Ski Jam. Trails are illuminated for night skiing and there is food and live entertainment, all for free, thanks to sponsors Evergreen Auto, Guide Boat Realty and Rock 105 FM.
Entertainment on the schedule includes:
Jan 16 - Crackin’ Foxy
Jan 30 - Steve Langdon
On Saturday, January 17, come on out for the Snowshoe Stomp from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Trails will be lighted with a cozy campfire in the forest for warming up and roasting marshmallows and enjoying hot chocolate under the stars.
Here’s a trail map for Dewey Mountain’s extensive 13 km of ski trails and 4 km of snowshoe trails.
At the Paul Smith's Visitor Interpretive Center there are events and programs for all ages. Learn some of our local forest residents' tracks at the VIC's Wildlife Signs and Tracks Snowshoe outing. Bring the kids and take a snowshoe with one of the wildlife experts as they look for signs of forest creatures during the outing. Snowshoes are required and are available for rent at the VIC if you don't have them. You never know, you might even see some live wildlife.
In the cultural department, Pendragon Theatre will be lighting up their stage again with two nights of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. The classic stage production tells the story of the unraveling of traveling salesman Willy Loman’s life dreams and his haunting story of the lost American dream. Join Pendragon on January 17 and 18 when the curtain rises at 7:30 pm both nights.
culturally speaking
Also on tap culturally is an opening of the art exhibit, Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Dept Benefit. All works on display during the exhibit at the Saranac Lake Artists Guild during the months of January and February will be silent auction items with bidding open through March 10. The public is encouraged to attend the opening reception from 5 - 7 pm on Friday, January 9th to view and pick your favorites to start bidding on.
Rounding out the month is another opening reception for a gallery show at Bluseed Studios. Abstractions, a juried exhibition, will feature the works of regional abstract artists. The exhibit will include art in the abstract genre, meaning using visual language of shape, form, color and line to create compositions which have a degree of difference from the real visual world. The public is invited to the opening reception for the exhibit on Friday, January 30 from 5 - 7 pm. Prizes for the exhibition will be awarded that evening. The Peoples Choice Award will also be voted on by attendees and awarded.
Come spend a night or three
