’Tis the season to get out and celebrate the holidays and all things winter. Good thing Saranac Lake has no shortage of winter. In fact, we specialize in it! You might have heard of our annual Winter Carnival, which is a ten-day spectacle that involves outdoor adventure, competition, and lots of that unique village charm giving us our motto: decidedly different. In addition to Winter Carnival, we are a hub of winter festivals and events. Below is a list of December events to get you started on planning that trip where you can witness firsthand what we mean when we say decidedly different. For more information on events, check our events listings.
Light Up Saranac Lake!: December 6
Gather downtown as area fire departments convene in Saranac Lake, trimmed in bright lights, decorations, accompanied by classic Christmas songs, and escorting a very special guest - Santa! Then watch as Santa lights the village's tree in Berkeley Green. And partake in a festive holiday sing-a-long led by Northern Lights Choir. Following the parade Santa will be at the Saranac Lake Library Cantwell Room where kids are welcome to visit with him! Tell Santa your wish-list and snap a photo. It’s a spectacular display of the town’s community spirit and joyful holiday cheer.
Sparkle Village Craft Show: December 6
Hosted by the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, this annual holiday craft show offers a variety of regional vendors selling their handmade gifts. Artisans from all over the Adirondacks get together to show off their talents, providing crafts and other items you can gift to a loved one, or buy for yourself, of course. The event is located right downtown at the historic Harrietstown Town Hall.
Jingle Bell Snowshoe Race: December 7
The Paul Smith’s College Striders are hosting the 26th annual Jingle Bell Snowshoe 5K at the scenic Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center. The trails at the VIC are well known for their beautiful vistas and expansive outlooks into the surrounding wetlands. The VIC is said to have some of the best snow in the Adirondacks, so you definitely don't want to miss this race! Children and adults are welcome to register for this event.
First Night Saranac Lake: December 31
Ring in the New Year surrounded by good music and good fun at this all-ages celebration. The event features over a dozen performers, including a variety of musical acts, at multiple venues, providing an eclectic blend of entertainment as the night progresses into a new, fabulous year. Stick around until midnight when we we drop the snowflake, Saranac Lake's version of the ball drop, on the old year on River Street and celebrate with a vibrant fireworks show over Lake Flower. Check the event listing for updates on this musical marathon.
