The weather
Saranac Lake is literally a winter wonderland. The temperature in Saranac Lake during the winter is around 24°F. And that’s the average, lows drop into negative digits. Saranac Lake will be cold - no doubt about that. But it will also be beautiful!
Saranac Lakers have their share of sayings —“You’re only cold if you’re standing still” and “There is no bad weather, just bad clothing.” Our advice is simple; pack smart and get busy.
Here are some basics to bring. Let’s get you dressed and on your way for winter adventures!
The layers
It doesn’t matter if you’re embracing your inner Olympian or just trying to stay warm on your way to dinner downtown, layers are key.
Start with a base layer made of polypropylene, merino wool, or other materials that wick moisture and dry quickly. Next add the insulating mid layer, clutch to keeping you warm. Try a fleece pullover, vest, or wool sweater.
Don’t stop with your top-half, either. Have you ever worn fleece-lined leggings? These are reason enough to love winter!
Layering is always on-trend in Saranac Lake, so don’t be afraid to pile them on.
The jacket
Once you have your layers, what you wear on the outside is the next piece to consider. Your jacket must do three things: block the wind, block the snow, and block your body from the negative temps.
Down has long reigned as the most effective insulating material. But there are other features that can bump a nice jacket to one you can’t live without. Those are: a hood, rib-knit cuffs, two-way zipper, and adjustable cinched waist.
Saranac Lakers love their parkas, and for good reason. It is like a snuggie on steriods that you can wear in public.
The hat
Listen to Mom…and cover your head. In cold weather, you don't want to lose heat through your head. By wearing a hat you will keep your whole body warmer!
Winter hats come in all shapes and sizes, and styles and materials. Synthetic fibers like polyester wick moisture and dry quickly. Wool is another warm, wicking material. Just make sure there is a fleece liner, there is nothing worse than an itchy forehead.
Find a hat you love. Because you and it will be inseperable when in Saranac Lake. Worried about hat-hair? Don’t be. You will stand out without it.
The boots
Pick a pair of boots that can cover differing terrain — whether it’s hiking or hitting art galleries. You are going to want boots that are warm, waterproof, and slip-resistant wherever you go.
Neoprene soles provide comfort, flexibility, and excellent waterproofing. And a rubber exterior provides additional waterproofing that is unmatched. Check out the comfort rating: a pair of boots in the -40 F to 40 F range are life.
It's also worth noting that your sock choice matters. Always wear a quality pair of mid to heavyweight winter socks with your boots. Your toes will thank you.
