Bringing farm flavors to your table
Every summer, Saranac Lake finds its familiar glow, from the beach and towering mountains to the lakes that hug its shores. The dazzling Lake Flower aside, there's one more thing that rounds out a perfect Saranac Lake summer. Local farm stands start to dot roadsides and quiet pathways all across the region, perfect for a pit stop on a road trip! These little pockets of farm goodness wave their flags and open their doors – and their bounty – for foodies and hungry travelers alike all season long. The farm stands of Saranac Lake pump vital energy into the farm-to-table movement in the Adirondacks, and showcase the robust harvest of our local farms. If you're not in the mood for some locally crafted cheese or a fresh-baked muffin, farm stands are also a great place to experience the work of local artisans! Let us introduce you to the farm stands to visit this season.
Moonstone Farm
First on our list is Moonstone Farm. Moonstone Farm has been offering the Saranac Lake region farm-fresh flavors since 2017. Located in Bloomingdale, the farm has continued the tradition of growing, raising, and producing the highest quality local food for the communities around it since its inception! Uniquely, Moonstone Farm offers CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares each season. This is perfect for small and large families, as members can take what they need, and leave the rest for others to enjoy. The farm seasonally offers organically grown heirloom veggies, eggs, and other farm-made surprises.
Norman Ridge Farmstead
Norman Ridge Farmstead is a family-run farm maintained in Vermontville, north of Saranac Lake. The farm offers picturesque scenes of its neighbor, Whiteface Mountain, and the Saranac River Valley. Norman Ridge grows a vast collection of crops, from cattle to pumpkins! Their roadside farm stand is stocked seasonally with 100% grass-fed beef, fresh eggs, and seasonally available fresh-cut flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Their seasonal offerings can include rhubarb, black and red raspberries, tomatoes, potatoes, pumpkins, and more. If you can’t make it to the farm, don’t fret. Norman Ridge Farmstead offers weekly deliveries to the Vermontville, Bloomingdale, Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, and Wilmington areas, bringing the farm right to you!
Bérubé Botanicals
in Vermontville, Bérubé Botanicals has maintained its farm stand since the summer of 2022. Bérubé is a bit different from other farms around. In addition to the traditional fruits, vegetables, and eggs available, Bérubé Botanicals also grows crops like chamomile and other plants that visitors can use to heal ailments or simply relax. The farm also creates an assortment of balms and salves, like their own Goat Balm Gold Muscle Rub, Elderberry Tonic, St. John's Wort Tincture, and more. Their abundant farm stand includes eggs (chicken, duck, and quail), coffee, pastries, honey, maple syrup, locally-grown meats from neighboring farms, crafts and gifts, and more each season.
Honorable mention: Kate Mountain Farm
Although this farm does not have a stand, they’re too good to skip! Kate Mountain Farm is the perfect way to end your farm tour in the Saranac Lake region. Kate Mountain Farm raises Mangalitsa and Berkshire pork products, chickens, eggs, turkeys, vegetables, milled hard & soft woods, and is part of a vegetable and meat CSA. In addition to a plethora of offerings, the farm also hosts tours and events in varying seasons. If you need sausages, rendered lard, or stock for your soups and sauces, they have that too. Create a variety of dishes, all sourced from Kate Mountain Farm! And just like Moonstone Farm, this farm is part of the local CSA, (Community Supported Agriculture) movement.
