Village Improvement Society of Saranac Lake
The Village Improvement Society (VIS) keeps Saranac Lake blooming. Founded in 1910, the VIS is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization that owns and maintains seven parks and plants flowers that beautify the Village of Saranac Lake. The Society upholds the spirit of the park system plan first presented to the Village in 1907 by the firm of the Olmsted brothers, the famous landscape architects who designed Central Park in New York City. Local women banded together and had the spirit, vision and conviction to make the plan a reality. The VIS meets regularly throughout the year and welcomes new members and volunteers. Volunteers and donations support the Society’s efforts to preserve Saranac Lake’s beloved parks and to enhance the natural beauty of our community. Take a self-guided walking tour of the VIS parks or simply enjoy the gardens, plantings and hanging baskets throughout the Village.
