Adirondack Regional Airport

WHY FLY SLK

Many people ask the question....

"Why should I fly from the Adirondack Regional Airport when I can drive to Albany International Airport and fly from there so much cheaper?"

....and make their decision without considering all of the associated costs.

Consider the following for a three-day business trip for a person residing in Saranac Lake and driving to the Albany to catch a flight:

    1. Round-trip mileage from Saranac Lake to the Albany Airport is approximately 290 miles @ $.505 per mile = $146.45 (2008 federal mileage allowance for business expense).

    2. Parking at the airport at $7.00 a day for three days will total $21.00.

    3. The person spends about six hours round-trip driving in the car. Factor in one additional hour needed to park, get to the terminal, check-in, go through security and be at the gate at least 30 minutes before flight time. An individual making $50,000 a year translates to an hourly rate of $24.04. For the 7 hours (non-productive) spent to use the Albany airport, that's an extra $144.24 cost for the company just for the travel to and from the airport!

What is your time worth to you or your employer?

(We won't add this expense in, though. We'll give companies the benefit of the doubt as they may consider the driving time just part of that employee's travel day, or it may be a leisure trip).

    4. Now, for an early morning flight, perhaps between 6:00 - 8:00 AM to you may want to travel to Albany the night before. Add the cost of a hotel room, likely not less than $90.

Without adding the payroll expense, we have an estimated travel cost of from $167.45 - 257.45 (mileage & parking, and maybe hotel) before you even consider the price of the ticket from Albany.

    5. What about connections? Flying SLK to BOS, Boston has 21 times more capacity than Albany: 171 weekly transcontinental flights, and 110 weekly trans-Atlantic flights. Albany has neither. Just to the 19 cities served by Albany, Boston has 588% more capacity. JetBlue alone operates 417 weekly flights from Boston to 25 cities.
